Dr. Deepashree H P* and Dr Gayathri Bhat N V

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The high incidence of cases of PCOS due to faulty dietary habits and stressful life, in day to day practice is really a challenge to gynecologists in their clinics because of its syndromic manifestation. It is one of the commonest problem among adolescents, developing soon after puberty. Most women having PCOS during their active reproductive periods will remain infertile. A study shows among infertile women about 20% attributed to anovulation caused by PCOS. Being syndromic PCOS can not be correlated to a single condition explained in Ayurveda. Considering the menstrual abnormalities and anovulation, PCOS can be co related to Artava kshaya. Artava kshaya is a condition in which prakupita kapha does the avarana of apana vata there by leading to aratava nasha and obstructing the artava pravruthi. Hence pacifying prakrupita kapha and clearing the avarana is beneficial in the management of artava kshaya (anovulation in PCOS). Aims and objectives: To assess the Ayurveda management of PCOS through Vamana karma. Material and Methods: A 28 years old female with married life of 3 years, who was anxious to conceive with the complaints of irregular menstruation since 4 years, visited the outpatient department of Prasuti Tantara and Stree Roga, SDM college of Ayurveda and hospital, Hassan, Karnataka. The pregnancy was excluded by UPT. USG-Abdomen and pelvis reports were suggestive of Polycystic Ovaries. Intervention was done with Vamana karma followed by Rajapravartini Vati for 15days and followed up after her menstruation. DISCUSSION: Vamana karma is the treatment modality applied here to enhance the suppressed action of avruta i.e vata by reliving the kapha avarana. Vamana karma helps in increasing pitta, by removing excess sowmyamsha from the body. After vamana karma, agneya dravya (Rajapravartini Vati) was advised for 15 days. Conclusion: The Vamana karma and Rajapravartini vati shows effectiveness in the management of artava kshaya which is evident by conception in this case.
