ABSTRACT
Objective: This study aimed to show data about the prevalence and distribution of sesamoid bones of the foot in normal adult Sudanese by using radiographs, to determine the number of the sesamoid bone of the foot, to determine the commonest site of the sesamoid bone, to show the difference of the sesamoid bones between the gender and study the symmetrical pattern of the sesamoid bone. Material and Methods: Observational Descriptive Cross-sectional Study Multicenter hospital based study, Convenient random sampling of cases, who were available at time of the study and fulfilling the inclusion criteria were 57 samples, Anteroposterior oblique and lateral view of foot radiographs, of 57 patients were examined regarding the prevalence, and distribution of sesamoid bones in both feet. Results: Study included male and female participants. The males totaled 40 (70.2%) and the females totaled 17 (29.8%), Number of sesamoid bones identified in a single foot ranged from 2 to 7 bones. However, when combined bilaterally they ranged from 4 to 9 bones, male had predominance in excessive number of sesamoid bones, where 23 (57.5%) of the male had 4 bones. 4 (10%) of the male had 5 bones. 8 (20%) of the males had 6 bones, 1 (2.5%) male had 7 bones, 2 (5%) males had 8 bones and 2 (5%) males had 9 bones. However, none of the females had 7, 8 or 9 bones. Almost all the females 15(88.2%) had 4 sesamoid bones except 2 (5.8%) of the female had 5 and 6 bones respectively. Conclusion: This is the first study focusing and reporting on the symmetry pattern of sesamoid bone of the foot and will improve the knowledge on sesamoid bone of the foot. It also provides anatomical data that could help clinicians in diagnosis and management of sesamoid bone disorder, a problem of misdiagnosis, mistreatment and missed diagnosis often occur. Which are often occurring in patients who present with pain and discomfort in the feet.
