Abstract

HEMOPOIETIC EFFECTS OF SOME HERBAL EXTRACTS USED IN TREATMENT OF INFANTILE ANEMIA IN CAMEROON

ABSTRACT

The hemopoietic activity of Manihot esculenta, Plastotoma africanum, Ricinodendron heudelotii and Sacoglottis gabonensis extracts used for treatment of infantile anemia were studied on hemolytic anemic rats. Anemia was induced by repeated intraperitoneal injection of phenylhydrazine (40 mg/kg of body weight/day) for two days. A drop in red blood cell count, haemoglobin concentration, and pack cell volume characterized the anemia condition. In addition, the histopathological examination of the bone marrow for blood cells further characterized the anemic condition.
