TYPE II DIABETES MELLITUS PREVALENCE AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT
Background: As it is known that medical students need to spend longer time to study in compare with other humanitarian specialties students; so they are more prone to have sedentary lifestyle which in turn make them more prone to elevated BMI which is associated with type II diabetes mellitus. The present work is aimed at measuring the prevalence of type II diabetes mellitus at al- Imam Mohammed bin Saud University College of Medicine in the Riyadh region, Saudi Arabia. Material and Methods: In this Cross-Sectional Study (Observational Survey), a simple random sample was taken from al- Imam Mohammed bin Saud University College of Medicine in Riyadh city. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire, from first year to 6th year. The SPSS program has been used for data analysis. Results: Of the participants, 13% have type II DM, while medical students who have pre-diabetes were 7%. Conclusion: it seems to be there is no increased type II DM prevalence among medical students, since that the prevalence of type II DM in Saudi population is around 27 %.
