ABSTRACT
Introduction: Streptococcus b is the main agent responsible for neonatal bacterial infections, with significant morbidity and mortality, this finding has led to a preventive attitude being proposed by screening for vaginal carriage of streptococcus b, as well as the establishment of antibiotic prophylaxis during labor of childbirth. The aim of the study is to determine the rate of maternal carriage of group B streptococcus (GBS), as well as the factors associated with this carriage. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective descriptive study, involving 100 pregnant women, who had vaginal samples between 34 and 38 weeks of amenorrhea. Results: The streptococcal vaginal carriage rate was 13%. None of the factors studied (parity, diabetes 1, diabetes 2, gestational diabetes) was statistically predictive of the maternal carriage of GBS. Conclusion: The rate of vaginal carriage of streptococcus b found in our study population is similar to other studies, which means that screening should be continued, as well as the introduction of antibiotic prophylaxis during labor, a practice which will reduce the incidence. maternofetal infections and their complications.
