ABSTRACT
Background: Diabetic neuropathy is a micro vascular complication resulting from chronic hyperglycemia. Symptoms may include sensation of numbness, tingling, sharpness or burning and pain that begins in the feet and spreads. Good control of blood glucose can delay the onset and slow progression of neuropathy. In Áyurveda, Diabetic peripheral neuropathy can be correlated to Prameha Upadrava. Prameha upon progression leads to Upadrava(~complications) such as Daha (~Burning of soles and palms), Suptata (~Numbness), Harsha (~Pain), Dourbalya (~Weakness), etc. The prime dosha involved is Vata along with Pitta and Kapha. Objective of the study: To evaluate the combined efficacy of Aranaladi taila abhyanga, Dhanyamla seka and Vidangarajanyadi kashaya orally in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy. Methods: Study design: An open labelled single arm clinical trial with pre, mid and post-test design. Intervention: All the 50 subjects were administered Sthanika Abhyanga (~Massage) with lukewarm Aranaladi Taila followed by Dhanyamla seka for the first 10 days. Followed by, Vidangarajanyadi Kashaya orally for next 20 days. Assessment: DN4 Questionnaire and pain DETECT score scale. Results: There was significant improvement in burning, pricking sensations, electric shocks, and numbness with p value less than 0.001. Additionally, reduction in fasting blood sugar (FBS) and postprandial blood sugar (PPBS) levels were also highly significant. Interpretation and Conclusion: Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the combination of Aranaladi Taila Sthanika Abhyanga, Dhanyamla Seka and Vidangarajanyadi Kashaya provides a clinically and statistically significant treatment approach for the effective management of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy.
