EVALUATION OF PATIENT PROFILE, TREATMENT AND PROGNOSTIC OUTCOME IN ICU ADMITTED PATIENTS OF A DISTRICT LEVEL GOVERNMENT HOSPITAL-A STUDY FOR ONE YEAR TIME PERIOD

ABSTRACT
Appropriate utilisation of intensive care unit resources is an important issue as the nation struggles to curtail the health care expenditure. The provision of intensive care in level of district hospital is discussed here. A process for implementation, monitoring and performance review of health care is also included. Aim: An observational study of the clinical profile, management and survival of the patient admitted in intensive care unit(ICU) in district level i.e. secondary care hospital and the optimum utilisation of limited health care resources to provide intensive care in the same. Method: The study included 370 patient admitted in ICU(having medical, surgical and post surgical complication) of district hospital over a period of one year. Result: Survival was assessed at the 4th week and at completion of 3rd month. Based on initial clinical presentation, age of the patient, and aetiopathology, their management and outcome varied. Conclusion: The optimal use of an ICU in a district general hospital is studied and recorded here. Team effort of medical, surgical and anaesthesia speciality along with round the clock patient monitoring can bring appreciable reduction in mortality and morbidity of critically ill patients.
